PREA: Specialized Training for Investigators

​The Prison Rape Elimination Act mandates that anyone assigned to conduct investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct receive specific training for this purpose (§ 115.34 Specialized training: Investigations).

Specialized training includes techniques for interviewing sexual abuse victims, proper use of Miranda and Garrity warnings, sexual abuse evidence collection in confinement settings, and the criteria and evidence required to substantiate a case for administrative action or prosecution referral.  Additionally, this session will cover SAFE/SANE examinations, crime scene preservation, proper reporting, effective communication techniques, and policy recommendations.

​     All students attending this course will receive a copy of the PREA Standards and related course materials as well as a certificate of completion.  This course has been approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission for in-service credit though your individual agency may differ.  The cost for the course is $28.00 per student.  To register, click here, send email to  info@pennantconsulting.net or call (877) 469-1250.

 

 

Interview and Interrogation

This one day course is designed to enhance the student’s ability to communicate effectively and equip them with the skills necessary to conduct thorough interviews and interrogations.  Some of the topics covered include:

  • Transitioning from interview to interrogation

  • Techniques for interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects

  • Overcoming communication barriers

  • Recording the interview

  • Set up of the interviewing room

  • Documenting the interview

  • Assessing baseline behavior

  • Verbal / Non-verbal responses

  • Analysis of written statements

This course may be approved for 08 hours of in-service credit (check with your specific agency).
